Bathtime is fun again!

For some reason, Bekah has never liked baths. It has perplexed me, because I've never had a child who didn't love bathtime before (especially as a baby!). Well, the last two baths have been calm, happy affairs- I hope this continues! Now, look at those eyes and ignore the toilet in the background... ;)

Cloth Diaper Giveaway!!! Woo Hoo!

Lindsay over at Passionate Homemaking is having a giveaway- three people get to try out an envibum diaper for free... awesome! Here's the link...

Multitude Mondays

As the rain drips from the rooftop onto the puddles of snow below, a quiet thankfulness flows from this hurried heart to a God so much bigger than my troubles...

50. a long shelf with 30 (!) hooks made by my beloved for my ever increasing need for organization... now I need to suppress the urge to paint the bedroom that it's going in (there's enough to be done without me adding more!).

51. grace from my family when I am tired and short tempered.

52. having almost two bins of clothes that fit Bekah and are still in good shape after being worn by 3 active girls (I officially switched her to 6-9 mos. clothes... yowsers!).

53. that everyone is really on the mend from our nasty cold (finally!), and life went on as normal today.

54. my bread machine that makes dough at least 3x/week without complaint.

55. that interest in our house has picked up again... we've had 2 showings in one week.

56. for our local consignment sale, which is where I get almost all of the children's clothes for the season- I am able to volunteer, so I can go to the presale and it's so much easier for me to get everything on my list when I'm not having to elbow my way past a crowd of hundreds of people!

57. that the Blocks are coming in two weeks!

58. that we get to spend time with all of Nate's side of the family next week (we haven't seen them since Thanksgiving, so we're really looking forward to it!).

59. for a library that is so easily accessible to us, and has a wonderful children's department (especially when it's completely yucky outside and everyone feels yucky inside!).

Potty time and cars

Okay, before you watch this and get grossed out by the potty being in our living room- it had just been cleaned, so that's why I didn't freak out when Stephen is carrying it around with his apple in his other hand. I just thought I'd let everyone know that from the getgo so you don't think I'm awful!!! :) Just appreciate how cute Stevie's little voice is!!!

Holy, Holy, Holy

Rebekah woke up from a nap and started fussing, so I went to grab a diaper and came back in the room and found Stephen singing "Holy, Holy, Holy" to her, so this is Hannah and I singing with him- and Bekah loves it!

Slightly the Snowman

Erin and Katy went out (Hannah was sick) and made a snowman after we got 9 inches or snow overnight two weeks ago... I love how Katy took pictures from various angles, making it look like she's directing traffic or something. And how cute is Erin making snow angels? :) Hannah and I stayed by the window with hot cocoa and cuddled while Stephen and Bekah napped.

Love is all around

We had a subdued Valentine's Day because of everyone being sick, but we still tried to make the best of it. I made homemade fudge for Nate, he got me chocolate (Dove-mmm!) and the girls roses and Stephen a car, and the girls and Stephen all made handmade cards for each of us and each other. We had fun distributing our cardsfor one another into our bags (usually we go to the homeschool party, but couldn't because of our colds), and I even snuck some candy in there for them (Erin was more disappointed about missing out on the candy, not the party- so she was thrilled!).

We've been sick...

Even though they start out in separate beds, Erin and Hannah always seem to end up together by morning!

They did have fun watching some of the Olympics...

But napping seemed to be a little better than the Olympics!

As much as I try to boost everyone's immune system in the winter, we still seem to get colds. This is how we spent last week- all of the kids had the respiratory stuff, some with a low grade fever. Then the honors fell to me, and now Nate. Hopefully this will be the last bit of it... we cannot wait for spring, for more than one reason!!! I've actually used up both bottles of Vicks (regular and infant), and we've been going through Children's Mucinex and elderberry syrup like crazy. Here's what my poor babies looked like...

What a big boy!

Stephen is now in big-boy land... we got out the toddler bed and dressed it up with his quilts from GG and Dottie, and he went to bed without a problem. He is very proud of his bed and even goes straight to it for naptime and goes to sleep right away. That's my boy! :)  He still kicks the covers off over and over again, though... you can see the edge of them below his feet...  thank you Lord for footie pjs!

Happy Birthday, Natie!!!

Nate holding Bekah less than an hour after she was born...

You are 33 today,
I can't believe it myself.
Yes, you still can run and play;
we don't have to leave you sitting upon the shelf.

Your daughters adore you, your son transforms you
Your wife thinks you're the best!
So let's raise a toast to the man in blue
who is our favorite above all the rest...

God bless you and keep you...
We love you!!!
Happy Birthday!!!!

Multitude Monday

From a fevered head but a thankful heart come my thanks for this week...

40. a soft, comfy bed with lots of blankets for the chills.

41. the children all are getting over their fevers finally.

42. piano music, (well, it's almost music!) coming down the hall.

43. our sweet neighbors, who said they'd pray for us about the showing we had Saturday (we haven't heard anything back, so we're assuming it's a no-deal, but I love that the Gargas' prayed for us!).

44. my seeds for the garden and the excitement that they bring from everyone when they arrive.

45. a home that we do love, even if we need to do a lot of work to it to make it possible for us to stay here.
So many people are losing their homes right now- we're really thankful that we have a house!

46. my Natie's job. It may require so much from all of us, but it is such a blessing that he can do what God has called him to and provide for us. Once again, so many people across the country losing jobs makes us incredibly thankful for his job also.

47. for the boy putting on his Daddy's shoes and clomping around the house, making up his own song, and then coming over to me and giving me a big, slobbery kiss.

48. for Hannah doing so well at reading and writing out words... she decided to read me some of a Little House book because I'm the sick one this time around, and she spelled out her own Valentine's cards (very well, too!). Such a big girl and so sweet!

49. for Erin offering to make the soup for dinner yesterday and meaning it.

Simple Woman's Daybook Returns!

As I start to settle into life as a mother of 5 children ages 8 and under, I thought I'd bring back my Daybook. It is such a fun way of being able to remember things later that I can't resist it...

FOR TODAY
(February 8, 2010)...
Outside my window... it's clear for now- but 12-15 inches of snow is coming!
I am thinking... about doing Mystery of History for school. So hard to choose...
I am thankful for... my boppy pillow and the pink ball of cuddles perched on it so close to me.
From the learning rooms... making Valentine's Day cards tomorrow with glitter and glue everywhere, I'm sure! :)
From the kitchen... steel cut oats with cream and blueberries, leftover chicken noodle soup with bread, and homemade mac n' cheese with veggies and ham in it.
I am wearing... warm fleecy pjs and socks- it's cold out there!
I am creating... a big shelf for the girls' things (actually, Nate wanted to do the work- I'm just the one with the vision!).
I am going... nowhere in the next day or two, if the weather is going to produce the blizzard they keep predicting!
I am reading... Morning and Evening by Spurgeon... about all I can handle for right now.
I am hoping... that Bekah sleeps through the night tonight.
I am hearing... thw wind picking up, and Stephen "reading" quietly to himself in his sleep.
Around the house... the dining room cabinets got a much needed re-organizing today, as did the workshop.
One of my favorite things... the anticipation of a blizzard through a child's eyes. Mine see snowmen when they hear blizzard. :)
A few plans for the rest of the week: Hot cocoa and popcorn again tomorrow, organize the pantry, dig out the sewing projects and try to fix the sewing machine, start planning next year's school, and have fun with the children.
Here is picture for thought I am sharing...

I love seeing the boy all bundled up like this!

Stop in and see Peggy if you'd like to keep a Daybook, too! http://thesimplewomansdaybook.blogspot.com/

More happiness from the girl...

Mishmell's visit...

We had so much fun with Michelle- the girls asked her to stay for another year! We had a great visit with the Grabers on Friday night, also... the girls and Stephen played really well with Peyton and Micah, and we're going to try to plan a camping trip with them this summer. Hannah started running a fever on Saturday night and wasn't feeling well enough to go to the Superbowl party at our friends home, so Nate took the boy and the other girls, and Hannah and Bekah and Michelle and I hung out with pizza and Finding Nemo and Miss Potter. What a lovely, relaxing evening! We miss you already, Mishmell!

Multitude Monday

Like the snowflakes falling, swirling through the sky; thanks to our gracious Lord come swiftly and without apology from a grateful heart...

40. A wonderful time with "Miss Westenhaver-" a sister to me, who has been through a lot in the past few weeks. It's been such a blessing to be around her and laugh and talk- we look forward to your next visit, Michelle! We'll be praying for you!!! (That's Michelle with Gracie-Lou-Who in the pic above)

41. Wooden blocks and trains with tracks all over the living room floor. Towers built as train stations and bridges over the tracks. All of the tripping and looking where we're going is worth it to see Stephen cautiously running his train through a bridge he has made, seeing the look of delight when he safely guides the entire train through.

42. My little Hannah with a fever, being sweet as pie and wanting cuddles from Mommy and James Herriot and Creatures that Defy Evolution and popsicles.

43. Saline spray and bulb syringe for poor little Rebekah's nose.

44. A full, busy life.

45. My husband, for working so hard for everyone in the church all day, every day- and still taking the time to take each one of the girls out for some Daddy-daughter time. They love it (and him!!!!) so much.

46. Hot chocolate, a good book, and Amish popcorn on a cold winter's day.

47. Hearing the girls and Stephen coloring, being kind and sharing their crayons and paper with one another and giving each other compliments on the drawings. Squabbles between them still happen- as they are just as sinful as we are- but they are fewer and farther between as time goes by, and I relish hearing this because it reminds me that my work every day training them is worth it.

48. The bare branches of our maple tree, which soon will be budding with the promise of spring.

49. Hearing that our farmer (who we get our milk and eggs from) is prepping for maple syrup again... can it already have been a year since we visited with them??? Spring really is almost here!

Multitude Monday

After a busy weekend with good friends, it's good to return to the normal. To the routine, the everyday. In light of this, here's this weeks's simple list of gratitude from a very simple, inconsequential life...

30. Hope. My old friends from Bethel have struggled with infertility and finally are pregnant. At 21 weeks they discovered their baby has no kidneys, no way to live outside the safety of Kristin's womb- and was supposed to die in utero. And yet, their little one is growing and kicking and living, much to her doctor's bafflement. She is due in 6 weeks. I weep for her and my other friends who have lost little ones, but I tell her there is hope in Christ, there is always hope. We are praying for a miracle. Their strength through the unknown has been inspirational to us. Our lunch yesterday lingered and turned into dinner as we spoke and prayed. Thank you, Lord, for sweet friendship.

31. A dining room floor that is finally sanded, and hopefully will be stained today. That may seem trivial, but I yearn to return to our family table. To lay out the pieces of silverware and cloth napkins and laugh and talk with no distractions.

32. My best friend waking me up in the morning, making me laugh out loud while the world outside is cold and dark. I can't imagine life without him.

33. Little bows on the feet of Bekah's sleeper.

34. Drawings in every room of the house, done in every medium possible. All with the same simple premise: I love you. My heart smiles every time my glance falls on them.

35. My six-year-old's matter-of-factness.

36. Warm water when most people in the world go without.

37. The birds that visit our feeder, now considered family friends. We get excited when they bring their babies, when they return from the south. Pulling out the bird book, we identify them and when they return day after day we exclaim over them. I never knew that taking the time to help care for the birds would be so satisfying, this "suburb girl" who only knew robins and crows, cardinals- and thought that every brown bird was a sparrow.

38. Learning with my children. Not only about birds, but about everything... They give me clarity of thought like I have never had.

39. Our friend Michelle, who is coming up from Tennessee this week for a visit. The girls (and Stephen) love her and so do we! She is such a hard worker and it's good for her to take a break... and we love to make her laugh, because she has the best sense of humor. Michelle paid us the biggest compliment the last time she stayed here. Nate apologized for all of the noise and chaos, and she said our home was like heaven to her. After dealing with so many families with issues (she's a Christian counselor), she was glad to spend time with a family that was doing things right. Nate was quick to point out that we have our struggles, too... but it reminded me during a busy, flustering time that what we are doing here is a vast improvement on our own childhoods (especially mine!) and that we hope and pray that our children will raise their children even better, so that each generation improves upon it instead of making the same mistakes.
